Take Your Dog to Work Day

Don't Forget -- Tomorrow is Take Your Dog to Work Day!
Originally published on June 25, 2009

Wouldn't it be great if you could take your pooch to work? Well, tomorrow you can, because June 26th is Take Your Dog to Work Day.

Created 10 years ago by Pet Sitters International (PSI), this special day was designed to promote pooch adoption from humane societies, animal shelters, and breed rescue clubs and to celebrate how much people love their furry pals.

Before you parade your pup through the office, be sure to clear it with your boss. And check with coworkers to see if they have pet allergies or are fearful of dogs -- scaring your officemates or making them sick would definitely spoil the fun!

If your workplace gives you the "A-OK," and your dog is in good health (make sure all of his shots are up to date), then go for it! Just remember to take whatever you'll need to keep your pup happy and comfortable for the entire day (bed, treats, toys, etc.), because if you want to continue the tradition, you'll want your best bud behaving at his absolute best!

EFA;s

Fabulous Fur from the Inside Out
Originally published on June 18, 2009

If Lady's fur is getting hair-raising looks despite your dogged attempts at grooming, she may need more of these important nutrients: essential fatty acids (EFAs).

For healthy skin and hair, dogs should have sufficient amounts of EFAs, like omega-6 and omega-3 fats. And because the body can't produce the stuff, dogs need to get it through diet. Most pet foods should contain enough EFAs to keep the coat in good shape, but if your pup's is dull, dry, or scaly -- or if you see hair loss or sores caused by excessive scratching -- she may need some extra.

EFAs are found in vegetable oils, such as sunflower, as well as in both fish and flaxseed oils. And you can boost the amount in your dog's diet with supplements, either in liquid or capsule form. But before doing this, your vet needs to check out your pup's coat to assess its condition.

And if it turns out that your dog does have a skin or hair problem, you should ask your vet to suggest the best supplement (and proper dosage) to give to your canine pal.

Besides their fur-boosting benefits, EFAs may ease arthritis and allergy symptoms by reducing inflammation.

To have a younger DogAge

DogAge measures your dog's biological age in people years. The DogAge benefits that correspond with the following dog health care tips are only estimations. Take the DogAge Test for a free DogAge calculation that's tailored to your canine.

To have a younger DogAge, my dog should: DogAge Benefits*
1. Keep a slim figure, with a noticeable, tucked-up waist. 1.8 years younger
2. Chew teeth-cleaning chews or biscuits and have his/her teeth brushed 3 times per week. 6 months younger
3. Avoid people food as much as possible. 6 months younger
4. Get his/her vaccinations and visit the veterinarian for regular checkups. 6 months younger
5. Take his/her medications as prescribed by the veterinarian, if applicable. 3 months younger

7. Exercise or play actively at least 3 times per day for at least 15 minutes each time. 6 months younger
8. Be trained to respond to my commands most of the time. 1.3 years younger

Canine Massage

Consider a
Canine Massage
February 26, 2009

Few things in life feel as good as a massage, so your pooch would probably love one. And just as people can benefit from a massage's mind-body effects -- like stress reduction, better blood circulation, and improved muscle tone -- so may your furry friend.

If you think your dog would enjoy a massage, run the idea by your vet. It may not be appropriate for pets with health problems such as arthritis, fractures, cancer, or certain skin conditions.

Look for a certified massage therapist who has been trained in animal massage, or ask your vet if he or she has training in animal massage.

Another option is to learn how to do it yourself. Massage therapy schools in your area may offer animal massage classes. Not only will you gain a new skill, but also you'll get more bonding time with your buddy. A massage also provides an opportunity to check your pet for unusual growths and lumps.

Christmas and Dogs

Table-Scrap Scares December 18, 2008

Sure, you'd like Fifi to share in the joys of the holiday table, but resist the urge to be generous. Foods and drinks you digest easily, like the following, can cause trouble for your pooch:

Dinner rolls -- Dough expands in the stomach, creating distressing gas.

Onions and garlic -- These flavor enhancers contain a compound that could damage a dog's red blood cells, causing anemia.

Rich sauces -- Gravy upsets the stomach and may lead to pancreatitis.

Bones -- Sharp pieces of bone can choke a dog or pierce or block her gastrointestinal tract.

Alcohol -- Even slightly spiked eggnog can be toxic, so don't leave any drinks unattended.

Sweet Lowdown

Sweet Lowdown December 21, 2006

'Tis the season for sweets, but avoid giving these treats to your dog -- especially chocolate, which can be deadly.

Chocolate smells tasty and edible to most dogs, but poses a major poisoning risk because it contains theobromine, a substance that is toxic to dogs. It can cause hyperactivity, increased heart rate, vomiting, diarrhea, and even death. If you think your dog has eaten chocolate, call your vet or an animal poison control center immediately.
Send this tip to a friend.
Buy the DogAge book!

Those extra pounds

From Paunch to Pooch August 3, 2006
Grab your dog's leash instead of the latest diet book to help lose those extra pounds.

According to recent studies, people who exercise with their pet lose more weight than those who exercise alone. The bonus is that your pet may lose weight, too -- sedentary lifestyles mean at least 25% of pets are overweight. Take a daily walk with your dog; if you don't have a pooch, offer to walk your neighbor's dog.
